Stuart Walton

Stuart Walton is an artist who has long been admired here at Hartleys, the icing on the cake therefore being that he was born just down the road in Dewsbury. After a stint in the army doing his National service, he began teaching himself how to bring brush canvas. He concentrated on painting the fast disappearing parts of Leeds, cobbled streets, terraced houses and dark yards; often dropping a haunting gas street lamp at the heart of his works.

There has been a recent rebirth in the popularity of his works, as collectors from Yorkshire and further afield find new appreciation not only in his wonderful play of light within an urban setting, but the fact that his paintings fit seamlessly into the modern midcentury design taste.
