A PAIR OF FAMILY SAMPLERS, early 19th century, both of vertical oblong form worked in various stitches in coloured silks and wool with initials and a moralistic verse over a house flanked by trees behind a hedge by Elisabeth Forbes Sharp, May 11th 1816, and Christian Susan Sharp, May 3rd 1818 of New Pitsligo, 17 1/4" x 12 3/4" and 16 3/42 x 12 3/4", framed and glazed (Illustrated)
N.B. Both samplers refer to "Sir W.F." which is likely to refer to Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo, 6th Baronet (1739-1806), who married Elisabeth Hay in 1770, Elisabeth and Christian were probably his grand-daughters.
